Jen Boben, TRIO SSS Director
Jen is originally from the Hibbing area, but moved down to River Falls, Wisconsin following college and worked in the Twin Cities area for 8 years. She has worked at 5 different campuses over the past 21 years and gained different experiences at each. Jen’s undergraduate degree is in Speech Communications from UW-Superior. At UWS she played 4 years of fastpitch softball and 1 year of basketball. Jen is very interested in the psychology of personality, positive psychology, and career decision making. She is certified in two different personality profilers, currently holding a Strengths Coaching Certification. Jen feels that working with SSS has been a perfect fit for her. She was a first generation college student and knows how tough college can be, so she has made a commitment to helping students navigate their college experience. Jen lives in Hibbing with her husband Carl, daughter Aune, son Mikko, and their mischievious, cute and cuddly golden doodle, Teemu. In her spare time, you will likely find her at her children’s sporting events cheering her heart out.

Donna Groettum, TRIO SSS Counselor
Donna has worked at HCC for 26 years. During the first 5 years, she was a recruiter; the next 5 years were spent advising. The past 16 years have been spent as the SSS counselor. Donna helps students with personal concerns, academic difficulties, and explore career possibilities. She earned her AA degree from Ridgewater Community College in Willmar, Minnesota and her BA degree in Communications from the University of Minnesota. When she was 37, she decided to go back to school to pursue a Masters degree in Counseling from the University of Wisconsin - Superior. It was also shortly after her daughter was born. It took her 4 years to complete the program because she was balancing work, school, and a family. It’s never too late to start! In her free time, Donna enjoys reading, yoga, walking, shopping and spending time with family and friends. Welcome to HCC!

Michelle Chamernick, TRIO SSS Advisor & Grant Assistant
Michelle received two degrees from Hibbing Community College in 1989: Associate of Arts and Associate of Applied Science in Legal Administrative Assistant. She has been at HCC and with the TRIO SSS program since March 1991. She went back to college later in life and graduated at the age of 40 with her bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 2009. She is also a certified Strengths Coach. Michelle will be one of your biggest cheerleaders; your success in reaching your goals is her mission, as well as the mission of the TRIO SSS program. Welcome to HCC and to SSS!
Outside of work, Michelle enjoys many activities such as traveling, watching hockey, golfing, curling, fishing, doing Zumba, and being up at the cabin and enjoying campfires with friends and family. Her favorite vacation destination is Disney World in Orlando. She is married and lives in Chisholm. She has a son and daughter that are now adults and a springer. Michelle is also a breast cancer survivor!

Torie Kutz, TRIO SSS Tutor
Torie grew up in rural Hibbing, graduating from Hibbing High School. She earned her AA & AS degrees from HCC and then transferred to Bemidji State University where she graduated summa cum laude with a BS degree. In 1999 she was hired as a lab assistant for HCC’s Multimedia Specialist Program. She also worked a few years at HCC’s Paulucci Space Theatre and since 2008 as a staff member of TRIO/SSS in HCC’s Academic Center. Torie enjoys working with students, reading, always learning, photography, any form of art, and traveling, especially to FL.

Fun fact: Torie used to be right-handed, but overcoming a challenge, changed to writing left-handed.

Christina Brown, TRIO SSS Advisor
Hibbing Community College has been an important part of Christina's life for a long time. TRIO SSS helped her get her A.A. degree at HCC and transfer to Hamline University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Communications. Since then, she's been an assistant newspaper editor, an admissions representative for HCC, an instructor at HCC, and a TRIO SSS Advisor at HCC. She left HCC in 2007 to be a stay-at home mom to her three boys. While she was home with the kids, she ran a frugal living website, did freelance writing, and worked as a part-time office assistant for Great Minds Learning Center, a nonprofit that specializes in reading and math tutoring. She was thrilled to have the opportunity to return to HCC in 2018 as a TRIO SSS Advisor. Christina loves helping students reach their goals. In her free time she enjoys reading, digital scrapbooking, loom knitting, and playing games.
