Jen Boben, TRIO SSS Director
I am starting my 8th year in the TRIO SSS grant program and I can honestly say, this is a true calling for me. I am originally from the Hibbing area, but moved down to River Falls, Wisconsin following college and worked in the Twin Cities area for 8 years. My undergraduate degree is in Speech Communications from UW-Superior. At UWS I played 4 years of fastpitch softball and 1 year of basketball. I feel that working with SSS has been a perfect fit for me. I was a first generation college student myself and know how tough college can be, so I have made a commitment to helping students navigate their college experience. In my spare time, my family and I enjoy Geocaching, camping, fishing, swimming, and a variety of sports. I live in Hibbing with my husband, daughter Aune, son Mikko, & golden retriever Laney.
Donna Groettum, TRIO SSS Counselor
I’ve worked at HCC for 21 years. During the first 5 years, I was a recruiter, the next 5 years were spent advising. The past 11 years have been spent as the SSS counselor. I help students with personal concerns, academic difficulties, and explore career possibilities. Fun fact: I started my grad school at the age of 37. It was also shortly after my daughter was born. It took me 4 years to complete the program because I was balancing work, school, and a family. It’s never too late to start!
Michelle Chamernick, TRIO SSS Advisor & Grant Assistant
In 1991, I began working at HCC with the SSS program. I am married with two children and a springer and live in Chisholm. I earned my AAS in legal admin assistant and my AA degrees from HCC in 1989. I went back to school later in life and earned my BA from UMD in 2009 majoring in psychology. Activities I enjoy include: Zumba, fishing, camping, golfing, curling, watching college hockey, reading, and writing poetry. I am a board member of the Chisholm Jr. Curling and Chisholm Figure Skating Clubs. My favorite vacation spot is Disney World in Orlando. Welcome to HCC and to SSS!
Torie Kutz, TRIO SSS Tutor
I grew up in Hibbing and graduated from Hibbing High School. I received both A.A. & A.S. degrees from HCC. I earned my BS in Technical Illustration/Graphic Design from BSU. I have been employed at HCC since 1999. I have worked as a lab assistant & fill-in teacher in the Multimedia Specialist Program, at the Paulucci Space Theatre and currently in the Academic Center. I live in Hibbing with my son, Ryan. I enjoy spending time with friends & family, shopping, photography, art, traveling, fishing & camping, and working out. Fun Fact: I was named Torie because my dad was in the Navy in the Pacific and came to Torishima, shima meaning island.
