This course introduces students to a range of American writers-essayists, poets, memoirists, scientists,environmental activists-who all explore the relationship of human beings to the natural world. Throught readings, class discussion and other activities, students will examine the concept and value of wilderness, different value systems relating to the natural world, transformational writings that led to the conservation and environmental movements, and different ideas about how to live in and with the natural world.
